Investigation underway after sanitation workers find dead baby in Ellis County 01:49

ELLIS COUNTY — A North Texas neighborhood is under scrutiny after the remains of a dead baby were found in a trash truck in Red Oak Thursday afternoon.

Dispatchers got the call around 1:45 p.m. from a sanitation crew working their route in a housing development called Glen Eagles, a gated community with 108 high-end homes.

The trash collection crew with DCI Sanitation pulled onto a street in the neighborhood and discovered the remains of a child, described by a witness as appearing to be the age of a newborn or infant.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Department responded and started an investigation. The sheriff released a statement Thursday night saying only that the investigation is active and ongoing.

A witness said the sanitation crew believes the remains were picked up somewhere along the route before they were discovered in the back of the truck. So authorities have to retrace the path of the truck as well as conduct forensic analysis of the remains to find out how and why this happened.

The sheriff's department is treating this as a criminal investigation and homeowners are reportedly trying to help authorities solve the disturbing mystery by checking their doorbell security cameras.

In July, Fort Worth Police investigated a newborn baby found in a dumpster at an apartment complex on Norma Street. That case remains under investigation.
