Disabled Veteran Honored With New Roof On Home

CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A program to help veterans in poor housing conditions means a new roof for a Carrollton vet, who also received a visit from a member of the Bush family Wednesday.
Seeing workers install a new roof on his home of more than 30 years is something disabled army veteran Joseph Tienter and his wife have needed for more than a decade.
"We'll sleep better. When the rain comes, we won't have to worry about it," Tienter said.
His wife Kathy tells us it means much more.
"Oh, everything. Everything. No more rotting wood. No more afraid of the electricity going to be shorted out. No more raining on us. Our service dogs won't look up at the skylight and go, it's coming in again," Kathy Langhorst-Tienter said.
Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush's office oversees veterans programs. Bush visited the home to draw attention to the program sponsored by a local roofing company.
"It's important that we shine a light on these issues that veterans face here in Texas," Bush said.
Tienter says he's grateful his generation of Vietnam era veterans can benefit from the goodwill he sees toward the current generation of veterans.
"We do a lot for our country, and we come back, a lot of times because of what we've done and what we do, we can't fit in, so to have someone help us is really good," Tienter said.
