NAPA -- Police in Napa on Thursday said a violent day ended with a double murder suspect shooting himself during a standoff.

A man and a woman were shot and killed at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue, according to Napa police.

Officers later spotted the suspect in his car in Napa and tried to pull him over. Instead he took off, followed by officers in a high speed chase that ended at Kennedy Park.

Both the Napa police county sheriff's office responded to the park where they tried to get the suspect to surrender. This went on for hours but ultimately ended with the suspect shooting himself, police said.

Michael Scott and his friends were just about to go skating when they saw two police cars ram into the suspect's vehicle at the park. The suspect kept going.

"You just seen them all flying by," said Nick who works at the nearby Kennedy golf course. "At first I didn't think nothing of it because I didn't see the black car and then the helicopter came and I said 'Oh they're chasing somebody.'"

The police department issued a community alert on its Facebook page shortly after 11 a.m.

"Please avoid the area near the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue for police activity," the alert read. "Officers are on scene investigating a shooting."

"It's not something we see every day," said Nick. "Out here or wherever I live in American Canyon, it's usually quiet and nice out here."

"It's crazy," Stephen added. "It's not cool. We don't like to have things like that in our town."

Police say this was an isolated incident and they don't believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
