Caltrans To Permanently Fix Hole Discovered On San Mateo Bridge

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) – Starting Tuesday night, Caltrans crews will close two westbound lanes of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge for five consecutive nights as they work to fix a hole that was discovered on the bridge.

The hole opened up last month on the westbound deck and was exposing the Bay underneath the bridge, according to Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus.

After discovering the hole, crews initially installed a metal plate on the bridge deck. The repair, however, was only temporary, Caltrans officials said.

Beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing through 5 a.m. Wednesday, two of the bridge's westbound lanes will be closed as crews begin preparatory work for the permanent repairs. Those closure hours will last through Saturday morning.

Then Saturday evening, starting at 7 p.m. and continuing through 9 a.m. Sunday, crews are scheduled to make the final and permanent repairs to the damaged section of the bridge, according to Caltrans.

The repairs will include putting in new concrete, new rebar, as well as adding supporting structures underneath the bridge, Haus said.
