Mostly sunny and noticeably cooler in Philadelphia area this Saturday
Finally a typical fall day!
Grab a jacket or sweatshirt because today will be sunny with highs in the upper 50s and tonight we drop to the 30s with clear skies giving way to increasing clouds late.
Dry conditions will persist today with an elevated fire danger across the entire area. Use caution with any flames outdoors and dispose of cigarette butts properly.
Tomorrow is the day we have been awaiting since Sept. 29! Rain is likely in the evening and overnight.
This storm looks like it will hold together and deliver an end to the record 42-day rainless streak we are currently in.
The storm is currently over the Midwest and Tennessee Valley with rain ahead of it' cold front. On the backend of the storm cold enough air is producing snow in the Rockies.
Clouds will spread across the area tomorrow and light showers are possible between 4-6 p.m.. The air in place overhead is still very dry, so it may take a few hours to see anything hit the ground.
Periods of steadier rain are possible between 7 p.m. tomorrow night and 5 a.m. Monday with several waves of showers crossing the area. Right now it looks like we will clear out for the Monday morning commute but roads may still be wet creating a slightly slower commute.
How much rain you ask? Not enough to end our drought, that would take more than 8-10 feet over a month, but we could see 0.25 inches, up to 0.75 inches depending on where you live. That would at least help firefighters with the wildfires in New Jersey and settle the dust across the region. Even better news is a second chance of rain on Thursday of next week.
Temperatures will also be on the decline. Gone are the summer-like temperatures. Instead we will hover near or below average in the 50 during the day and 30s at night. That is where we should be at this time of year.
Sunday brings our first decent chance for measurable rain in over 40 days. Clouds will increase as a new system approaches from the west, and showers are possible late Sunday into early Monday. While it doesn't look like a soaking rain, widespread showers could bring as much as .25-.5 inches to the area, and every little bit helps.
We are also watching the tropics as Rafael moves through the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane will continue to weaken and may dissipate in the Gulf without making another landfall. We will keep you posted.
