Police identify man fatally shot by officer after pursuit in West Philadelphia 00:27

A Philadelphia police officer shot and killed a 47-year-old man in the Cobbs Creek section of the city Sunday evening, police said.

Police identified the man as 47-year-old Jonathan Corbin in an update Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday, Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said police received a call about a disturbance between "a male and a female believed to be his girlfriend" in a house on the 5400 block of Chancellor Street.

According to Vanore, the male suspect allegedly fired a shot inside the house and the female called 911.

In a previous update Monday afternoon, police said a male witness overheard the gunshots from his home the night of the shooting. Police said the witness left his home and saw the suspect get inside his friend's car.

According to police, the suspect pointed a gun at the witness and his friend, demanding property. The suspect also tried firing his weapon, but police said, he was unsuccessful.

A responding officer confronted the suspect, who pointed his firearm at police. After seeing this, a responding officer fired his service weapon, according to police. It's unclear if the suspect was hit.

"He essentially was carjacking that individual," Vanore told reporters Sunday night. "The officer confronted the male. A shot was fired at that location. The male was able to get into that truck and flee the location. That caused officers to attempt to apprehend the male."

The suspect got away in the truck, and police pursued him to 52nd and Woodland streets, where he got out of the truck while armed with a firearm, according to police. A police officer and a sergeant attempted to apprehend the suspect in a nearby empty parking lot where he ran. Both the officer and the sergeant fired shots in the parking lot, police said.

The man was wounded at one of the scenes and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:47 p.m., police said.

"There's a lot of work to do," Vanore said Sunday night. "At this particular time, we have to interview the witnesses that are there. We have video that we have to collect. There's a firearm here that has to be examined. There's other evidence here. So it's going to take some time to put this all together."

It's unclear at which scene the man was injured, said Vanore, who added that police recovered a Taurus 9mm gun at the second scene. None of the officers or any other people were injured.

The Philadelphia Police Department's Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, PPD's Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Philadelphia DA's office are investigating the Sunday evening incident.
