Officer injured after motorcycle crash involving dirt bike in Northeast Philadelphia, police say
A suspect driving an illegal dirt bike was taken into custody after colliding with a Philadelphia Highway Patrol officer and attempting to flee in Northeast Philly on Wednesday night, police said.
The crash happened in the area of Leon and Stanwood streets after 9:30 p.m.
Police said the highway patrol officer was heading west on Stanwood and Leon streets when the 22-year-old suspect driving the dirt bike went through a stop sign at a high rate of speed and struck the officer.
The 22-year-old tried to get away, but police said a neighbor helped the officer take the suspect into custody.
"Not only did he check on the officer, [he] checked on the 22-year-old who was involved in the accident," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "That's when the 22-year-old was trying to get away. And our neighbor held onto him, and with the help of the sergeant, they were both able to hold onto this individual who was clearly struggling with both of them."
Both the officer and suspect were placed in stable condition at a hospital.
