Del. County Church Collecting Shoes For Haiti, Uganda

By Robin Culverwell

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The youth at one area church are jumping in "feet first" to learn the importance of helping others with a shoe drive that runs through Oct. 31st.

Sword of the Spirit Church in Lansdowne is working to collect 7,500 pairs of shoes by the end of the month to send them to those in need in Haiti and Uganda.

The church will accept gently used shoes -- any style, any size -- that are suitable for a warmer climate. Sandals, dress shoes, sneakers and even flip flops are acceptable.

For the youth, it's a service project and a labor of love to see photos of those they help.

Minister Shirley Posey says if you'd like to help, you can drop shoes off at the church at 71 South Union Avenue in Lansdowne.

"As soon as you turn in the parking lot, you're going to see the front door, and so we'll have a couple of boxes set right outside our door, and you can just drop the shoes right into that box."

Penn Wood High School and Penn Wood Middle School are also collecting shoes for the drive. Once collected, the shoes will go to a shoe clinic that's a salesroom and repair shop in one, which also provides jobs for residents.
