Falling Ice Plagues City; Briefly Shuts Down Upper Level Of Verrazano Bridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As temperatures jumped to 40 degrees on Wednesday, melting and falling ice put pedestrians and drivers at risk.

Large chunks of ice fell from a building on the Upper West Side Wednesday, hitting several parked cars on Central Park West.

The upper level of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge between Brooklyn and Staten Island was shut down for about 90 minutes in the early afternoon because of falling ice.

This was the second time this week that falling ice was enough of a problem to make local headlines. Following a snowy, icy storm on Monday morning, Debbie Vandervoet told CBS2's Tracee Carrasco that she noticed danger from above when she saw several chunks of ice falling from 4 World Trade Center.

"It looked like glass falling down and coming off the windows," she said, "We were walking to the memorial this morning and big shards were falling off."

Cell phone video on Monday also showed a piece of ice falling from a building on the West Side. The Sidewalk below was littered with chunks of ice and blocked off as a precaution.
