Best game: 'The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom'

In the latest installment of "The Legend of Zelda" series, you take on the role of Zelda herself as she embarks on a quest to save the people of Hyrule from mysterious rifts that are spiriting them away.

With the kingdom's legendary hero Link missing, Zelda must rely on her wisdom and the assistance of a celestial being named Tri to make things right again. Using the Tri Rod, Zelda can create echoes, which are copies of objects found in the environment, and use them to solve puzzles and battle enemies. These echoes can form water blocks to reach higher ground, construct bridges from trash, or hurl rocks at enemies.

The game also introduces the ability to create echoes of monsters, so you can have your own minions fight alongside you in combat. With a mix of classic Zelda elements and fun new mechanics, this new adventure promises to grab the attention of both longtime fans and newcomers.

"The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" is a Switch exclusive and will arrive September 26.

Best role-playing game: 'Mario & Luigi: Brothership'

The "Mario & Luigi" series is making a comeback with "Mario & Luigi: Brothership," despite the closure of the games' original developer, AlphaDream. While details about the game are scarce, it's been revealed that the adventure will take place on an island that doubles as a ship.

The game will feature the series' signature turn-based battles, so you can strategically command the iconic Mario brothers in combat. You can also look forward to the return of Bros. Attacks, special moves that require precise timing and coordination between Mario and Luigi to execute effectively.

This is going to be a colorful role-playing adventure that has a little something for everyone. If it's as whimsical and silly as all of its previous installments, there's no doubt it'll make quite the splash on Switch.

"Mario & Luigi: Brothership" is a Switch exclusive and will arrive November 7.

Best party game: 'Super Mario Party Jamboree'

One of the most notable additions to "Super Mario Party Jamboree" is the expanded online multiplayer feature, which will allow up to 20 players to join in on the festivities simultaneously. And we'll also get to know Pauline, who'll be available as a playable option for the first time in the series.

The original game introduced players to a more playful and mischievous side of Mickey Mouse, and this updated version will change things up significantly with improved visuals and better controls.

Armed with a magical paintbrush, you'll guide Mickey through plenty of interesting levels while you solve puzzles by manipulating the environment. It lets you paint or thin out elements of the world, which is a fun way to to change typical puzzle-solving gameplay up. This will undoubtedly be the first time some Disney faithful have been able to check out the game, since it's never been available on modern consoles.

Is pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch game worth it?

Pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch game definitely has its perks. By reserving your copy ahead of time, you'll make sure you get your new game in your hands ASAP, so you don't have to worry about whether it's in stock. Plus, more often than not, you'll get a bonus by buying early, whether that's an in-game perk or a physical item that you can use in real life.

Why pre-order a Nintendo Switch game?

Pre-ordering isn't just about making sure you reserve inventory. There are other benefits too, like pre-loading the game, which means you can play a digital copy of a new game the instant it goes live. For those sought-after special editions, pre-ordering might be the only way to ensure you get one.

Does pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch game save money?

Price reductions for pre-orders aren't a given. Sometimes you can save a few bucks, or get some extra goodies instead of cash back. Standard game pricing typically remains consistent with new games. The real savings manifest in the form of bonus content and merchandise that come with pre-orders.

How far in advance should I pre-order a Nintendo Switch game?

If you're eyeing a hotly anticipated title, it's smart to pre-order as soon as it's available to get those special bonuses. For regular editions, you have more flexibility, but you should grab limited editions whenever they go live for your best chance at getting them. If you like living on the edge, placing a pre-order even just a day before release can still secure your spot in the gaming action.
