Vehicles worth $1 million stolen from Mayfair auto dealership

Thieves make off with $1 million worth of vehicles from Mayfair dealership 01:57

CHICAGO (CBS) – A total of $1 million worth of luxury cars were stolen from a luxury auto dealership in the Northwest Side's Mayfair community early Sunday.

As CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported, Luxury Auto Selection, at 4580 N. Elston Ave. off Kennicott Avenue, is typically closed on Sundays. But they were swarmed with police detectives this particular Sunday, as police tried to piece together how burglars got away with nine vehicles.

The Chicago Police Department also went door-to-door to try to find surveillance video to catch the perpetrators.

The theft happened around 4:40 a.m. Sunday. Police said the suspects broke the window of an overhead door with an unknown object, entered the dealership, and took the $1 million worth of cars.

No one was in custody late Sunday. The entrance to the business was blocked by a U-Haul van.

The website for the delearship shows they have 56 cars in inventory. A look inside the business indicates that several high-end cars – such as Porsches and BMWs – were still there after the theft.

This latest burglary is eerily similar to one where thieves stole at least 14 vehicles worth $1 million from a dealership in Evanston. Evanston Now reported the suspects in that theft broke a window before executing the heist.

The Evanston theft happened just after 2:30 a.m. Monday, March 7 at the Autobarn Collection, on Greenwood Street just west of Dodge Avenue on Evanston's west side.

The thieves stole four Mercedes Benzes, three Audis, two Porsches, one BMW, one Dodge Durango, one Bentley GTC, one Maserati Levante, and one Jeep Grand Cherokee, Evanston Now reported.

Meanwhile, Chicago Police would not say late Sunday whether the incident in Mayfair is connected to two other recent burglaries less than two miles away.

On Friday, March 11, the suspects targeted as business in the 3000 block of West Irving Park Road and got away with cars, cash, and key fobs.
