Scattered snow showers Wednesday night into Thursday in Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) — The Chicago area's first snow of the season begins Wednesday night as scattered light rain showers return to the area, then transition to snow flurries after dark.
While it will be cold and windy with occasional flurries overnight, this is not the main round of snow heading our way.
A few suburbs will wake up to a dusting of snow on the grass on Thursday, but heavier snow moves into the area from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Snow will briefly transition back to rain showers late Thursday before tapering off altogether.
With temperatures near or just below freezing during the heaviest periods of snow, 1-2 inches of wet snow accumulation is now expected throughout Chicago and across much of the area. A band of heavier snow totals up to 3" is possible in parts of northwest Indiana, while snow totals will be slightly lower in far western suburbs.
While much of the accumulation will be on grassy and elevated surfaces, slush is possible on the roads Thursday morning through early afternoon. Use extreme caution when driving in winter weather conditions.
Gray, chilly weather sticks around on Friday then temperatures warm slightly with breaks of sunshine this weekend.
