7 Proviso West High School Students Hospitalized After Eating Laced Brownies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in west suburban Hillside are investigating, and one person is in custody, after seven Proviso West High School students went to the hospital, after eating brownies laced with an unknown substance.

Fire and police department officials confirmed seven Proviso West High School students were hospitalized Friday afternoon.

Police said the students had digested an unknown substance inside a brownie.

Masiah Harris said she did not know the brownies was laced and felt "sleepy and dizzy" after eating one.

She said a sophomore was selling the brownies for $10 in the lunch room Friday morning and that all of the sick students were freshmen.

Masiah's mother, LaShan Harris, said she was angry when she found out her daughter had been drugged by what she was told was marijuana.

"I feel I send my child to school to be safe. She needs to be safe," Harris said.

"We have one juvenile suspect in our custody for further investigation," Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek said.

A spokesperson for the school district said:

"We are aware that ambulances were called to Proviso West this afternoon and transported a few students to the hospital.  The school exercised such measure as a safety precaution.  We are working with local authorities and families to address the issue as the safety and the well-being of our students is our top priority."
