Man charged with beating woman after SWAT standoff in Plainfield Township, Illinois

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Plainfield Township man has been charged with beating a woman with a gun before engaging in a nearly two-hour standoff with police Saturday morning.

Will County Sheriff's officials said, around 9:40 a.m., deputies responded to a home in the 25100 block of Dina Court in Plainfield Township for reports of a 42-year-old woman who had been shot at the scene.

While responding, deputies were told the victim had fled the scene and hid in a nearby car.

Plainfield police officers were the first to arrive at the home, and found the victim bleeding from her head. However, it was determined she had not been shot, but had been hit multiple times in the head with a revolver.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

Meantime, police also had been told the suspect, 42-year-old Devin Nier, was inside the home with a hostage.

Police told neighbors to shelter in place, while a SWAT team arrived to negotiate with Nier, who later surrendered without incident around 11:30 a.m.

No hostage was ever located, and police did not find the gun that had been used to beat the victim.

Nier has been charged with aggravated battery and domestic battery, and could face additional charges.

Information on Nier's first court appearance was not immediately available.
