CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 14-year-old boy was critically wounded Tuesday night in a shooting in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

At 7:33 p.m., police were called to the 7800 block of South Marshfield Avenue, where they found the boy had been shot.

At least 21 evidence markers were found at the scene.

He suffered several gunshot wounds to his body and was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Street Pastor Donovan Price says the city needs to do better.

"It's a terrible sight to see a child's backpack, clear backpack, and shell casing markers at the same place at the same time. But unfortunately, when a child who is on their way from school was shot today, a 14-year-old was shot multiple times and is now fighting for his life, we need to do better, Chicago."

Police haven't said if they know how or why the boy was shot.

No one was in custody late Tuesday in the shooting. Area 2 detectives were investigating.
