Dak Prescott becomes highest-paid NFL player in history after record-breaking extension with Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones all smiles after Dak Deal is done

DALLAS — Dak Prescott is staying in Dallas. In a major announcement just hours before Sunday's season opener at Cleveland, Prescott and the Cowboys reached a four-year contract extension worth $240 million, sources confirm.

The new deal makes the quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history — with an average annual value of $60 million — and keeps him in Dallas through the 2028 season.

According to NFL.com, this is Prescott's second extension with the Cowboys since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Prescott, 31, had remained hopeful about securing a new deal, emphasizing his desire to stay with the team where he has played his entire eight-year career.

"Call it negotiations, whatever, conversations," Prescott told CBS Sports Texas in August. "A lot of good things are going on there, so a lot of confidence. Once again, as I've said any time I feel like I've talked about it, I've got confidence in my guys, these guys getting something done."

Last season, Prescott threw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns with nine interceptions, marking the third time he surpassed 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in his career. He has led the Cowboys to the playoffs five times in his first eight years, including the past three seasons, The Associated Press reported.

Despite his success, the Cowboys are still searching for a postseason breakthrough, aiming for their first Super Bowl title since 1995, per AP.
