Maplewood teenager fatally struck by vehicle on Highway 61, state patrol says
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — A teenage pedestrian is dead after an SUV struck him on Highway 61 in Maplewood on Monday morning, authorities said.
The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash occurred at about 5:45 a.m. in the highway's southbound lanes near Highway 36.
The victim, later identified as 17-year-old Maplewood resident Heriberto Serverino-Luna, was killed. The 30-year-old driver, also from Maplewood, wasn't hurt.
The state patrol doesn't believe alcohol played a role in the crash. The highway was shut down for hours as investigators reconstructed the crash.
This was the second serious crash in the east metro Monday morning. A crash on eastbound Interstate 494 diverted traffic near Fifth and Seventh streets.
